A strong low-pressure system above northern Japan is likely to cause heavy snow and storm-like winds in Hokkaido on Wednesday, with wind speeds reaching up to 126 kilometers per hour (78 miles per hour) in some locations, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The level of wind is enough to overturn some moving trucks, and it will be "extremely dangerous" to go outside, according to the agency. Hokkaido is expected to see up to 80 centimeters (31 inches) of snow by Wednesday morning, with wind and snow especially strong during the day on Wednesday. The agency's headquarters in Hokkaido said that visibility during the day will be close to zero because of the blizzard, which may cause substantial transport delays. Some elementary and junior high schools were shut down Tuesday due to weather, including in the city of Tomakomai in southern Hokkaido. According to the meteorological agency, there are two low-pressure systems above the archipelago which will combine to create a strong low-pressure area with air pressure as low as 956 millibars by Wednesday evening. The low-pressure pattern is expected to continue until Thursday. The meteorological agency is warning that areas along the Sea of Japan coast could see strong winds, high waves and heavy snowfall beginning on Tuesday. A separate snowstorm over the past weekend in some areas along the Sea of Japan helped reduce turnout in Sunday's parliamentary election.
