Description:

President Rafael Correa confirmed the information on Twitter account, saying that three Chinese and 10 Ecuadorean workers died in the incident. Thirteen people have been killed and a dozen more injured in a mudslide at the construction site of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric power plant in Ecuador's Amazon region, authorities said Sunday. Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa confirmed the information through Twitter, saying that three Chinese and 10 Ecuadorean workers died in the incident. "Serious accident last night in Coca Codo. 13 confirmed dead: 10 Ecuadorians and 3 Chinese. Our condolence to their families and co-workers," the president said. The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. (local time) Saturday, according to officials of the Empresa Publica Coca Codo Sinclair. Rescue brigades, soldiers and police were deployed to the construction site, where initial reports said 15 people were trapped in the mud. The Chinese-funded plant employs 7000 workers, 20 percent of whom are Chinese. The US$2.2 billion facility is the largest of its kind in Ecuador. Coca Codo Sinclair is set to start operating in February 2016 and is expected to generate 36 percent of the energy needs of the South American country.
