Four people were inside when a small plane crashed on a vacant lot near Evangel University about 5:30 p.m. Friday. And while the plane was reported to have been on fire at one point, those inside appeared to have survived the crash with only minor injuries. The plane apparently clipped a cell phone tower before crashing. It was clear from the scene that at least two people had to be removed from the plane by emergency workers and were taken away on stretchers. No fatalities had been reported about an hour after the crash. At 7:20 p.m., the city issued a news release saying two were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Two others did not need medical transport. The plane went down in a small open field just south of the university campus. The spot, surrounded by houses, is made up of several empty residential lots now owned by Evangel. None of the nearby homes showed visible damage but several tree limbs were down. Neighbors said the plane was flying low and was seen disappearing behind some homes before a loud noise was heard.
