Description:

Hailstorm and unseasonal rain over the last two days have hit grapes, pomegranate, onion, onion saplings, maize, vegetables, wheat and other crops in parts of Satana, Niphad and Yeola in Nashik district. The weather became cloudy on December 11 and, in the evening, gave way to winds, unseasonal rain and hailstorm. At places like Niphad, Sinnar, Malegaon, Chandwad, Baglan, Deola and Yeola, rain and hailstorm damaged a large acreage of crops. The hailstorm hit around 5 pm and continued for about an hour. At Yeola, it showed its aggression around 9 pm. "The damage to crops is 100%," said Vaibhav Taskar, an affected farmer from Ruee village in Niphad. "We have spent heavily on grapes, now the harvest was in the berry sugaring stage while the late April-May harvest was in fruiting stage. We have lost all of it. The cost per acre of grapes is about Rs2 lakh. We would have fetched a good price for the yield, but now all is gone," Taskar added. Ruee village sarpanch Kailas Taskar and some other farmers climbed a tower on December 12 to draw attention of the administration to their damage. They demanded that the tehsildar, sub-divisional magistrate and taluka agriculture officer visit their farms and do a realistic assessment of the damage. The damage in Ruee village is so heavy that the entire village could not eat on Thursday night. "No house cooked a meal as everyone is devastated," the sarpanch told dna. On Thursday night, 20 sheep died due to the rain and hailstorm at Dhulgaon in Yeola tehsil. On Friday, the hailstorm hit Satana, Chandwad, Wadner Bhairav and the Deola and region. It was so ferocious that about 20 farm workers in Satana tehsil were injured. The pomegranate plantation was flattened, causing heavy damage. It was the same story at other places as well.
