A clean-up operation is underway after an oil spill at the Marsden Point oil refinery in Northland. Refining NZ says an oil slick was noticed just after 4pm on Friday around the crude carrier HS Alcina, which is berthed at its wharf. The oil discharge has been stopped and a boom has been deployed to contain the slick and protect the beach and rocks. The vessel Taranui has been skimming oil from the water and all oil from the harbour side of the ship back to the Alcina itself has been mopped up. Refining NZ says it has a full contingent of oil spill response experts on site and all the equipment it needs to deal with the spill throughout the night, including floodlights
