A computer outage is affecting air traffic control in London, threatening to snarl hundreds of flights and tens of thousands of passengers in one of the world's busiest airspaces. In a statement issued at 10:49 a.m. ET, British air traffic control provider NATS said: "Airspace is open. We're restricting traffic volumes in accordance with capability we currently have in our system." The flight restrictions are expected to remain in effect until 7 p.m. London time, or about 2 p.m. ET. Online tracking websites showed some flights still landing at London-area airports as of 10:45 a.m. ET, though it appeared as if no departures were taking off from airports in the area. Both the BBC and The Associated Press had initially reported that the outage forced the "closure" of the London airspace.
