Heavy snow and blizzard are expected to hit most of Romania on Sunday night (December 28/29), with the south-eastern region most affected. In the following days, the weather will get colder and temperatures will drop severely on New Year’s Eve, according to warnings issued by the national meteorological administration. It will start snowing on Sunday evening and it will continue for most of Monday, December 29. A code yellow for snowfall has been issued for most of Romania for this period. Authorities have also issued a code orange for blizzard for the south of Moldova and the north of the Muntenia and Oltenia regions, as these will be most affected. Significant snowfall will be accompanied by winds of 70 to 80 km/h. The code orange targets the Bacau, Vaslui, Vrancea and Galati counties in southern Moldova, as well as the neighbouring counties of Buzau, Braila, Ialomita, Prahova, Dambovita and Arges (see map below). A code red for extreme blizzard could be issued later tonight (Sunday, December 28) if the weather get worse. The snowfall is expected to stop on Monday evening. Temperatures are expected to drop in the following days and to go below minus 10 degrees Celsius during the day in some part of Romania, on December 31 (New Year’s Eve). During the night, temperatures could go down to minus 25 degrees in northern Moldova and eastern Transylvania, making it one of the coldest New Year’s night in years.
