Description:

After finally taking off after more than 13 hours waiting on the tarmac in Abu Dhabi, an Etihad Airways flight was diverted to Vienna for a 73-year-old passenger who died. Flight 23, along with numerous other Etihad Airways flights, were grounded for several hours Saturday due to fog at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The passengers on at least two flights were kept on board their respective planes on the tarmac awaiting the fog to clear. Those on board Flight 23, traveling from Abu Dhabi to Dusseldorf, were finally in the air when the plane had to make an emergency landing in Vienna. "After keeping passengers on the plane for more than 13 hours last night, flight EY23 to Dusseldorf has just diverted to Vienna with a passenger receiving CPR from the crew," one passenger said in an email to United Arab Emirates' The National. "Etihad Airways flight EY23 from Abu Dhabi to Dusseldorf was diverted to Vienna on Saturday, January 3, 2015, due to an on-board medical emergency involving a 73-year old male passenger. A medical team met the aircraft upon landing to assist the passenger on-board. However, he was pronounced deceased," a spokesman with the airlines confirmed. "We offer our deepest condolences to his family. Hotel accommodation has been arranged for other guests on-board the flight and alternative transportation is being arranged between Vienna and Dusseldorf for tomorrow." The name of the deceased passenger wasn't released, nor was his nationality. A statement issued to Khaleej Times said the man's death had nothing to do with the plane's wait on the tarmac. Etihad Airways Flight 183 also saw a significant delay and passengers were made to wait on the tarmac for 12 hours. Passengers on board the flight, which was scheduled to travel to San Francisco, took to Twitter to complain that they had spent hours on the tarmac due to a fog delay. "Hey @EtihadAirways, I've been sitting on EY 183 in Abu Dhabi for 10 hours now. THIS IS NOT OK. There are kids and seniors on this flight," tweeted Ravali Reddy. Tempers flared as passengers complained of inadequate food, water and ventilation.
