Ten units from Carlow County Fire Service spent a total of 28 hours battling a blaze which engulfed the old Erin Foods Factory at Cannery Road near Dr Cullen Park over the weekend. The fire is believed to have broken out at around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday evening and there were immediately fears for the safety of people in the area as a result of toxic materials being burned into the atmosphere. The roof of the disused factory was constructed from asbestos cement sheeting and all emergency services personnel at the scene were immediately given face masks to protect themselves from the fumes. Residents were warned to stay inside, lock their windows and doors and bring all pets into the house as the fire raged on. Roads were closed from Dr Cullen Park Roundabout to Athy Road Roundabout on Saturday night as crews continued to fight the blaze. The factory housed over 900 bales of straw, which caused the building to go up in flames. It is yet unclear whether the fire was deliberate and gardai are investigating.
