A cholera outbreak has been confirmed in Homa Bay county. Health executive Lawrence Oteng said the first case was reported on Thursday last week at Magina Secondary School, Ndhiwa subcounty. Speaking at his office on Wednesday, Oteng said 45 students, who had symptoms of the disease were taken to Homa Bay county hospital. "Six were admitted while the rest were treated and discharged," he said. Oteng said top county health officials formed a rapid response team on Tuesday to contain the spread. "We subdivided the team into three. The first group will map out areas where reports have been confirmed and treat the sick. The second will follow up on those exposed to cholera and their caregivers," he said. He said the third group will educate the public on how to contain the disease, by visiting schools and holding barazas to promote hygiene. Oteng said the county has partnered with the Kenya Red Cross Society, Medecins Sans Frontières, Plan International and Unicef in the initiative. Seven people died of the disease, and 80 others were admitted in Migori county.
