Taal Volcano in Batangas showed new signs of activity with 35 volcanic quakes recorded in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Thursday. In its 8 a.m. update, Phivolcs said one of the quakes occurred at 8:42 p.m. Wednesday was reportedly felt at Intensity I in Barangay Calauit in Taal Volcano Island. However, Phivolcs said the alert level at Taal remains at 1, meaning a hazardous eruption is not imminent at this time. Still, it reminded the public the Main Crater should be strictly off-limits because sudden steam explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. It also said the northern portion of the Main Crater rim, near Daang Kastila Trail, may also become dangerous when steam emission along the fissures suddenly increases. Phivolcs added the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strongly not recommended.
