Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, has been showing increasing activity since Friday, when the frequency of eruptions was recorded at more than 15 times every six hours. Head of the volcanic watch post for Mounts Lokon and Mahawu of the Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Center Farid Ruskanda Bina said on Sunday that the volcano had also shown activity in mid-February. "But this time, the activity escalated. We have informed the Tomohon city administration to take the necessary steps and to keep the people away from the danger zone," Farid said. The information has also been sent to the Geology Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Center in Bandung every six hours. "They will decide whether the status of the volcano is dangerous or not," he said. In September last year, the volcano erupted forcing many people to leave the area. Also in the same province, Mount Soputan in Minahasa Tenggara regency has shown an increase in activity as of early this year. Four eruptions sending thick smoke as high as 4,500 meters from the peak were recorded on Saturday.
