The Angolan city of Lobito has been hit by massive flash foods from an onslaught of torrential rains, causing the death of 62 people, 35 of them children, according to initial reports from local authorities. The Angop state-run news agency reported that the flood water had reached three meters, nearly 10 feet, in some areas of the city since the rain started Wednesday. Dozens of homes and city structures have been destroyed by the floods. Angolan law enforcement and rescue teams are attempting to get into the areas that were hardest hit to search for those who are still unaccounted for. Angola's president Jose Eduardo Santos has called for local authorities to give aid to the victims of the floods. Many parts of the country have been hit by massive rain storms since the beginning of the year. In Luanda, Angola's capital, at least one person died this week and hundreds more were left homeless and without shelter after 137 houses were destroyed by flash floods, according to a media report.
