Description:

Heavy thundershowers triggered by a depression killed three people and damaged crop in thousands of hectares across Telangana on Friday even as the meteorological department forecasted hailstorms and more rain for the next three days. The sudden rains left a trail of destruction in Medak, Warangal and Karimnagar districts, while Hyderabad received heavy showers in the afternoon and weather experts said more rain was in store over the weekend. Three members of a family died and two others suffered severe burns after lightning struck them at Velturu village of Sadasivapet mandal in Medak district. The victims were identified as Ch Danaiah, 56, his son-in-law Mallesh, 32, and grandson Anil Kumar, 9. Due to heavy rain, a poultry farm collapsed on the outskirts of Mahbubabad town in Warangal district and 2,000 birds inside it perished in the incident. In Hyderabad, weather experts said due to an interaction between two air currents, one coming in from the north-western direction and the other emanating from the south-eastern region, will result in heavy thundershowers along with isolated hailstorms across Telangana. "First we have moisture being brought over from the south-eastern direction and than the north-westerly component is very strong. This combined factor will bring in a lot of thunderstorm activity," said K Seetha Ram, senior meteorologist, Met department, Hyderabad. "Now, for the next three days we are predicting that the storm activity would only intensify," he added Officials also said Hyderabad could see very heavy rain. "When it comes to places where the air is full of pollutants, the chances of the intensity of the thunderstorm increasing becomes manifold. Since the pollutants aggravate, the formation of cumulonimbus clouds increase," he added. The national weather forecasting centre, New Delhi, has also predicted heavy rains on Sunday across Telangana and asked people to be alert since the probability of thunderstorms seems to be strong. Untimely rain with thunderstorms has caused havoc in several parts of the state in the last 10 days. Crops spread over hundreds of acres in Nizamabad, Warangal and Adilabad have been damaged. Farmers complained that even the harvested crop was lost as they had kept it in the fields for drying. Jangaon and Hanamkonda received 3 cm rain each, while Warangal recorded 2 cm. The rainfall, however, brought some relief to people who have been experiencing pre-summer heat.
