A raccoon removed from the yard of a Haddonfield home has tested positive for rabies, according to the Camden County Health Department. A Haddonfield resident found an injured and disoriented raccoon in the backyard March 1. The family's puppy had been out in the yard earlier in the day, however no direct contact with the raccoon was observed. The animal control officer for Haddonfield was notified and the raccoon was submitted for rabies testing at the New Jersey Public Health & Environmental Laboratories (PHEL) in Trenton. The Camden County Health Department was notified by PHEL that the animal was rabid. The puppy is current with its rabies vaccinations. However, the full series had not been completed due to the puppy's age. State regulations dictate that the dog be confined and observed for six months from the date of the incident.
