The Cape Winelands Fire Department says 150 firefighters have been deployed to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve to battle the blaze currently threatening the area, EWN reported on Tuesday. Firefighters on the ground are currently battling the blaze, which first flared up on Monday afternoon, to ensure the fire does not spread over the Helderberg mountains. "At this point, the aim is to keep the fire from moving over the mountain to the Helderberg basin," Cape Nature spokesperson Justin Lawrence told News24. "At the moment the fire is still in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve and parts of the Cape Pine area." Lawrence said that about 700 hectares of vegetation has been destroyed since Monday afternoon. Three volunteer crews from Working on Fire are currently dispatched to the area, along with one crew from Cape Nature, and crews from the Volunteer Wildfire services. Around 80 firefighters from various services were first deployed to help battle the blaze on Monday. Three helicopters were called in to help douse the fire, which up until that point had consumed 300 hectares of fynbos, but had to retire due to poor visibility caused by dense smoke. The fire line is long and in very difficult terrain. No homes or buildings were being threatened at that point, Cape Winelands Fire Department Station Commander Jaco Thuynsma told TimesLive on Monday.
