"A state of emergency will be declared in Smolyan Municipality," Nikolay Melemov, Mayor of Smolyan, told Radio FOCUS - Smolyan. Melemov informed crisis staff was being convened. He added the situation across the municipality was very serious owing to the intensive snowfall, which has not ceased since 5:00 p.m. on Friday. "There are many fallen trees and torn wires. Power supply has been cut to almost all settlements in Smolyan District, including the town of Smolyan. Teams of the power distributor are working to restore power supply but it is still unclear when this will be possible," Mr Melemov remarked. The municipal authorities are seeking the cooperation of firms having the equipment to remove snow over the complicated situation the region is faced with. "Situation in the entire district of Kardzhali is serious. It continues to snow heavily. A state of emergency has been declared in Ardino [Municipality]," said Iliya Iliev, Governor of Kardzhali District, speaking for FOCUS News Agency. He explained main roads of the republican road network were being cleaned. "The difficulties we are encountering are a result of the many fallen trees. We are at present organising the cleaning of roads and removing of fallen trees with the Fire Safety and Civil Protection [directorate]. There are problems with power supply in the municipalities of Ardino, Momchilgrad, Krumovgrad, Kirkovo, and Chernoochene. There is no information about people in distress at present," Iliev stated.
