Vinyl Chloride and arsenic have been detected in several of the City of Kokomo's municipal water wells. These wells provide drinking water to nearly 50,000 residents living in Kokomo. There have been detections that have exceeded the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA's) maximum contaminant level (MCL) for drinking water in the untreated water; however, because the city has previously installed a filtering system that removes these contaminants from water, the water being sent to residents for consumption is free of these contaminants. Working under a cooperative agreement with U.S. EPA, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has determined a need to investigate the ground water contamination so that appropriate actions can be taken. Site investigations in 2007 confirmed levels of vinyl chloride at levels exceeding the EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL) in raw water at four (4) municipal wells (pre-treatment). The IDEM has identified fourteen handlers of chlorinated solvents in the area that could be contributing to the contaminated ground water plume. Despite several investigations in the area, the exact origin of the contaminants is unknown.
