Wylfa nuclear power station has shutdown its remaining reactor to investigate a problem found during re-fuelling. Bosses from operators Magnox said a problem was found in Reactor 1 on Saturday. They said a "conservative decision" was taken to shut the reactor down to investigate the issue at the Anglesey nuclear plant. Reactor 1 is due to generate power until the end of 2015 while Reactor 2 stopped operating in 2013. Wylfa, now the last operating Magnox reactor in the world, was originally scheduled to end generation in 2010. A Magnox spokeswoman said: "On Saturday afternoon, during normal refuelling activities, the operator was unable to remove a fuel element. "Following consultation off-site the operators took the conservative decision to shut the reactor down to investigate the issue. "The reactor was operating normally until shut-down, which was carried out safely in the usual manner. "The reactor will not restart until we have completed our investigations - at this stage we cannot be specific about the timing." Reactor 1 is due to continue generating until December 2015 when it will enter the de-fuelling stage.
