An attack by honey bees left 10 people injured at Arvalem, Bicholim, on Wednesday afternoon. The day, which was the final day of the fasting ritual being observed for the Shirgao zatra, saw the bees attack some 'dhonds' (special devotees observing a fast) and some locals, who were eating at a public dinner at Pandavwada, Arvalem. All injured persons were rushed to the primary health centre at Sakhali and were discharged late evening. On receiving information about the attack by bees, forest officials rushed to the spot and attempted to remove the honeycomb along with fire brigade personnel, but, they could not succeed in doing so as the bee hive was out of their reach. Among those who were injured in the attack were Sadanand Tuyekar, Datta Kerkar, Namdev Kerkar, Kanti Parsekar, Kajal Kerkar, Charan Kerkar, Raju Bhat, Dhiraj Amonkar, Suresh Tuyekar and Anil Paryekar. Forest official Santosh Gaonkar attempted to remove the honeycomb. The fire brigade team comprised sub-officer Atchut Dhawaskar and firemen Rohidas Parab, Sandeep Parab, Mahdev Gawas and Madhkar Naik. The bees attacked some 'dhonds' and some locals, who were eating at a public dinner at Pandavwada, Arvalem. The injured persons were rushed to the primary health centre.
