Hurricane Niklas - the storm which has raged across Germany today - has now claimed at least three victims as intense, windy weather continues to batter Europe. Police have confirmed that one victim is a man who died near Magdeburg, east Germany, killed after a concrete wall was blown over by the stormy weather. Among other confirmed victims are two road maintenance workers who died when a tree fell onto their car in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. The hurricane has now forced several key transport services to close for the day as a safety measure. German weather service spokesman Peter Hartmann said winds reached up to 160 kilometres an hour on higher ground. He said: "This is one of the heaviest storms in recent years." Hurricane-force winds have also battered the Netherlands, where the Dutch meteorological office issued a code red warning. A spokesman for Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, Europe's fourth largest, said some 90 flights had been cancelled because of the wind.
