A fire which threatened homes and shut roads in Burry Port has been put out. Dozens of firefighters battled for several hours to prevent the flames from reaching homes. More than 17 acres, or seven hectares, was affected by the fire which destroyed grassland, likely killing any wildlife that was there. Its cause has not been stated, although many such grass fires of late are thought to have been started deliberately. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it had received more than 70 emergency 999 calls regarding the fire, which broke out at around 4.15pm. Crews from Llanelli, Carmarthen and Gorseinon were dispatched to deal with the fire at The Graig. Because of the smoke from the fire, and the number of emergency services at the scene, the A484 Gwscwm Road was closed in both directions for a time. One witness, Barbara Logan, from Llanelli, said earlier she could see one house at risk from the flames. She said: "The fence started to burn and then it was changing direction to the houses below, it was very scary to watch. "Hope they are all safe, it spread very fast." Last week a huge fire destroyed 50 acres of grassland in the Swansea Valley and also threatened homes. And on one day last week the fire service said it received 250 999 calls in just one day regarding grass fires. Police have promised 'robust' action against anyone found to have started a grass fire.
