A test indicates birds in a Baer Poultry Co. chicken barn near Lake Park have the deadly avian flu virus--a result that will mean the destruction of up to 300,000 chickens. Jareb Baer, a partner in the family business, said Wednesday that a preliminary test from a throat swab of sick birds showed they were infected with avian flu, a virus that has plagued many poultry farms in Minnesota and caused the destruction of millions of chickens and turkeys. "We had an initial positive test come through," Baer said. That initial result has been confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, which will oversee the destruction and disposal of the birds. The possible outbreak was discovered in an "isolated area" of a large confinement barn on the Baer farm, about 30 miles east of Moorhead near Lake Park.
