A weak tornado was spotted by residents in West Oahu Thursday afternoon and confirmed by the National Weather Service. Hawaii News Now first began receiving pictures from viewers of the rare weather event around 3 p.m. on Thursday. Photos showed the twister kicking up dirt as it moved, but no damage to structures was apparent. At 3:40 p.m., the NWS confirmed that the photos depicted a weak tornado in the Barbers Point area. Meteorologists said it was first reported by Air Traffic controllers and confirmed through the images provided by Hawaii News Now viewers. At the time of the tornado, satellite and radar indicated only cumulus clouds and a few showers in the area. Although rare, this is not the first time a tornado has touched down on Oahu. In February 2009, a larger tornado made landfall in Kapolei. And in March 2012, a water spout moved onto land in Lanikai, becoming a tornado.
