Camden County officials confirmed Tuesday two rabid raccoons were discovered this week, both killed by dogs in Camden and Haddon Township. A family pet killed the first raccoon in the yard of a South Camden home the afternoon of Feb. 1 and the city's animal control officer responded. The raccoon tested positive at the New Jersey Public Health and Environmental Laboratories (PHEL) in Trenton and the state Department of Health and Human Services notified county officials of the finding. The dog, which was not up-to-date with its rabies vaccinations, has received the required shots from its veterinarian. In addition, state regulations dictate that the dog be confined and observed for 6 months from the date of the incident. The second animal was also killed by a family dog at a Haddon Township home the evening of Feb. 3. It also tested positive for rabies at PHEL. That dog is current with its rabies vaccinations and has received a rabies booster from its veterinarian. It will be confined and observed for 45 days from the date of the incident, per state requirements.
