40 Colorado Springs Firefighters responded to a reported explosion and fire at a self storage facility Saturday afternoon. The Fire Department said the call came in at 4:00 pm of an explosion at the Secure Care Self Storage on King Street in Colorado Springs. When firefighters arrived, at least one of the units was engulfed in flames. The fire spread to other storage units, and firefighters had to cut open the units to get the fire out and make sure it did not spread. Witnesses told News 5 they saw flames reach a couple of feet into the air on the storage building's roof. By 5:00 pm, CSFD had the fire under control and were working to put out hot spots. The hazmat crew also responded, which is standard protocol whenever a storage unit catches fire said CSFD. Fire investigators are looking into what caused the explosion and fire. CSFD did not have a definite number on how many storage units were damaged in the fire, but it appears several were burned in the incident.
