Severe storms are bearing down on Melbourne after the weather bureau issued alerts for parts of the city and greater Victoria, warning of possible heavy rainfall, damaging winds, flash flooding and large hailstones. The State Emergency Service has received 50 callouts in the Melbourne metro area, and 30 in Ballarat, in central Victoria, since the storm weather began on Friday afternoon. "All in all, it's a busy night, but given the thunderstorm reports, it's not as busy as I'd expect," SES duty officer Daniel Burton said. He said calls for help were for flooded buildings due to damage caused by heavy rains. "Damage in mostly flooding and building damage - and that's mostly water that's come in from leaking roofs, sky lights or windows, which is unusual for thunderstorms. "Normally we'd expect to see fallen trees, but we haven't seen much of that tonight. "The calls we're getting through really reinforce the requirement to clear gutters, because a lot of the flooding we're getting is coming through roofs." Mr Burton said the SES had also received reports of flooded roads and urged motorists to take care. Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said Melbourne could expect the stormy weather to continue throughout the night.
