A large flash across the North Island has been reported where a meteor allegedly lit up the sky. Some Twitter users have described the scene as a "blue streak that exploded". Sonic booms have also been reported, as well as reports of a big flash in Wellington and near Hamilton. WeatherWatch tweeted: "We believe this was most likely a meteor (shooting star) or a meteorite (small one that hits the surface). Put simply: 'Wow!'" Haritina Mogoshanu from the Royal Astronomic Society of New Zealand said it was likely the burning object was no bigger than a clenched fist. Although there have been eyewitness reports of something dark falling from the sky after the flash, Mogoshanu said it is unlikely that any object will be recovered. "It's possible that it could have touched down," she said. "But they have a tremendous speed so when they come in they tend to bury themselves into the ground."
