An SU-24 jet fighter has crashed in southern Russian Volgograd region, Defense Ministry said Wednesday. The warplane on a training mission crashed at 11:23 a.m. Moscow Time (0823 GMT) near the city of Kalach-on-Don west of Volgograd. The supersonic aircraft crashed seven km off the runway and caught fire after it took off from the Marinovka Air Base. According to the Defense Ministry, the plane was not loaded with ammunition. Rescue team has extinguished fire at the crash site and is still searching for the two pilots onboard. Citing a source in the law enforcement agency, Tass reported that the pilots, each of whom has more than 1,000 logged flight hours, presumably have ejected from the plane. A special commission has been established by the Defense Ministry to look for the reasons of the crash, while General Staff chief of Russian Armed Forces has ordered to suspend all the flights of Su-24 planes until investigation results have come out. The accident was most likely caused by power or control system failure, Interfax quoted a source in the Defense Ministry as saying.
